On 12 April, the consultation on the novel food status of the sea cucumbers Holothuria Fuscogilva, Holothuria whitmaiei and Holothuria scabra was published. These cucumbers are marine animals classified in the family Echinoderms. In the consultation, sea cucumbers are intended to be used as food and also infoodsupplements in the form of capsules, in which the whole animal would be freeze-dried and reduced to powder. The sea cucumber makes up one of the four types of prestigious dried seafood in Chinese cuisine, and is a fixture in some refined dishes celebrating Chinese New Year. As a result of the consultation, this food was declared a Novel Food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283; therefore, although sea cucumbers are consumed in other countries, this food is not permitted in Europe
